A legal marriage in Bali, should conformed with the marriage laws of The Republic of Indonesia. Generally the Indonesian legal marriage is based on religious marriage blessing and Indonesian civil marriage registration. If you’d like to have a legal marriage in Bali, you cannot just have a religious marriage blessing without the Indonesian civil marriage registration. You cannot have an Indonesian civil marriage registration only without the religious marriage blessing. So religious marriage blessing and Indonesian civil marriage registration is a package bound of legal marriage in Indonesia.

Currently Indonesian laws recognize these five religions for legal marriage: Buddhist, Catholic, Christian, Hindu and Moslem. Each religion has different requirements, ritual and procedures. Couple should be in the same religion and must have valid written document as proof of their religion, such as a baptist certificate; especially for Indonesian nationalities.

For certain religious marriage blessing such as Catholic, should be carried out in a Catholic church only. Other religious marriage blessing can be carried out in a hotel, private villa, beach or chapel.

Not all countries in the world could recognize overseas legal marriage. Some countries will ask you to filing the Indonesian civil marriage certificate into your home country’s marriage registration department; and additional document requirement might be needed.
